The Debt Journey: How ordinary people rebuild their financial futures

It’s a familiar feeling for many South Africans: that creeping anxiety when you look at your credit card statement, or the mental gymnastics of figuring out which debit order hits when. With South Africa’s household debt-to-income ratio at 76%, most people are spending more than three-quarters of their income just servicing debt – leaving very little breathing room each month.

Yet here’s the paradox: in today’s financial system, you need credit to build credit. And when used intentionally – to acquire income-generating assets for example, debt stops being a liability and starts becoming a valuable tool for growth.

In this episode of the JSE Investor Avenue podcast, Gugulethu Mfuphi sits down with financial experts Liana Henning and Nerina Visser to unpack how ordinary South Africans can take control of their financial futures. From managing debt sustainably to building long-term wealth, this conversation offers practical, achievable steps for every stage of your financial journey.
